JOHNSON ET AL., ON BEHALF OF THEMSELVES AND ALL OTHERS SIMILARLY SITUATED CERTIORARI TO THE UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE NINTH CIRCUIT No. 23–175. Argued April 22, 2024—Decided June 28, 2024 City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, 603 U.S. ___ (2024), is a United States Supreme Court case in which the Court held that local government ordinances with civil and criminal penalties for camping on public land do not constitute cruel and unusual punishment of homeless people. US Constitution Eighth Amendment Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted. This amendment was adopted on December 15, 1791, along with the rest of the United States Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights is the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution. There are 27 amendments. The sentence structure of the Eighth is parallelism, and the placement of verbs at the end of phrases, as in Latin, adds force.
